Pleistocene - approx. 25,000 years - Yakutsk, Siberia, Russia
Woolly rhinoceros skull of 80 cm long, 30 cm wide and 11 kg. The skull was found near Yakutsk, a place in Siberia, Russia. The skull is not entirely complete at the bottom. The part where the teeth would have been is missing. The two horns that would have been on the top of the head are also missing, which is almost always the case. Other than that this is a very solid and interesting piece. The pictures are part of the the description and give a good impression.
The woolly rhinoceros had two horns, a nasal horn and a frontal horn. The front (nasal) horn could reach huge dimensions. The rear one was a lot shorter. From finds in the permafrost, it has become clear that they had a thick coat with long hair, just like the woolly mammoth who also lived at the time.
The woolly rhinoceros lived on the vast, cold and dry steppe.
The animal had a shoulder height of about a meter and a half and could be over three metres long. The head was pointed down, so that low vegetation could be eaten. Bulls were usually larger and wore larger horns than cows. These horns were possibly also used in fights between bulls during the bronze age. The longest nasal horn ever found measures
129.5 cm. The frontal horn was no longer than 42 cm. On the basis of coat remains, found in the permafrost, it is thought that the woolly rhinoceros was grey-brown with some dark shades.
