A ‘Bartmann jug’ is a jug made in the ‘Rhineland stoneware area’, an area around Cologne, in the 15th through the 18th century.
According to tradition, the bearded man-head on the neck of the jug is a depiction of God. According to another explanation, Cologne potters, expelled in the 16ct century, depicted the faces of Cologne city leaders out of revenge on the neck of the Bartmann jugs. The potters were supposedly expelled because of the toxic gasses that were released during the firing process. This caused a riot and many potters moved to Frechen. Up to now this hasn’t been proved. The very early shapes from the 15th and 16th century, ‘Spitsneuzen’, seem to have their origins from jugs from the Roman period.
