Rare piece of Maastricht by Gert-Jan Veenstra
Born: 11 April 1957 in Workum
Anyone who has the privilege of owning a work by the Frisian painter Gert Jan Veenstra will be fascinated by the brilliance of his palette again and again; the virtuoso way this painter makes the naturalness of his subjects come alive on the canvas. With smooth, fresh brush strokes, and fine fluency, refined to the smallest details, Veenstra depicts aptly the scenery on each painting, invoking aesthetic feelings.
He was born on April 11, 1957 in Workum. A picturesque port town situated on the former Zuiderzee. Soon the family moved to Witmarsum, a nice village in the middle of a meadow area, below Bolsward and a former Hanseatic City on the Middelzee, a bustling centre of commerce and art, with historic facades and an attractive city Hall. Oil-painting on canvas, size without frame is 30 x 50 cm, including frame 34 x 54 cm, in good condition and signed in the lower right.
At a very young age he already distinguished himself from his contemporaries by sketching nature with charcoal or pencil, showing that unmistakably born talent that was manifesting itself. As the years passed by, Gert Jan mastered the art of drawing and was inevitably overcome by the urge to capture all the beauty in colour.
This profound change in technique, the search for the right light and colour variations took a lot of practice and study. By frequent visits to museums, and advice from colleagues, Veenstra grew as an artist and he developed a lively painting style, matching the nostalgic work of famous masters from previous centuries.
At every opportunity that occurred, the painter could be found with a sketchbook in hand taking in the great outdoors. Portraying the Dutch landscape and cityscape, with the ever-changing elements, demanded great attention and insight.
With his skilled approach in the moving compositional manner, Veenstra knew how to capture, on linen, the autumn colours in the trees against the stormy clouds, the serene light of the translucent light clouds on a morning in spring, the unevenly shaped white openings in a frozen icy surface illuminated by the warm glow from a window of a snowy farm or the deafening silence before the approaching thunder with the rain rolling in.
When one truly appreciates the matching colour details in the shadows that are receding from the foreground and the contrasting soft hues that were used to paint the contours of the trees and the reflections of the farms as well as the rippling stream, one will be struck by the enormous sense of depth and involvement of the painter who used a realistic style to capture his feelings for and closeness to nature. Therefore his work is in high demand, not only in his own region, but also well outside that region. Many pieces by Gert
Jan Veenstra will be crossing the border.
