Biography of the artist:
Daniele Fissore was born in 1947 in Savigliano (Cuneo). He began his artistic career as a self-taught artist, which has now lasted for over forty years. In 1975 he took part in the 10th Rome Quadriennale and in 1976 in the ‘Biennale del disegno’ in Milan. A constant evolution of the early pictorial themes (see ‘Cabine telefoniche’, ‘Opposizioni’, ‘Ricognizioni’, investigated with an in-depth analysis of strong photographic inspiration) leads him to the human figure and the portrait. In 1980, Fissore moved to London, where his work convinced English critics and earned him the concession of a London studio from the British government. Here he developed and perfected the series of ‘Pic-nic’ (exhibited at the ‘House Gallery’ in 1981), which anticipated the subsequent experiments aimed at studying the relationship between figure and landscape. Back in Italy, he intensified his exhibition activity, with many solo and group exhibitions in several Italian galleries, orienting his painting choices to the theme of ‘Green’. In the late 1980s, Fissore linked his research to the Galleria La Bussola in Turin, inaugurating an intense artistic and professional partnership. In 1993, with a solo exhibition dedicated to ‘Large Formats’, he unveiled the methods of his work, combining the major editions with charcoal sketches. In the same context he presents the paintings on the new theme of the ‘Mare’, through which he explores and deepens the emotional and imaginative aspects of the landscape, to the point of removing it from its materiality, to return it in almost abstract pieces, with a weave of waves, lights, reflections. Since 2001 he interrupted his exhibition activity and continued his painting research, renewing his interest in the ‘Grigi’ of his early years (‘Cabine telefoniche’, ‘Opposizioni’) and exhibited in 2005, in the exhibition La Via del Sale at the castle of Prunetto, in the Alta Langa, with the titles ‘Video’, ‘Gray Green’, ‘Cieli Nuvolosi’. In 2006, as part of his return to the original subjects, he also took up the theme of monuments dedicated to the Risorgimento heroes, which began in 1985. From that year are some unpublished sketches and paintings dedicated to the monument of Santorre di Santarosa located in the namesake square in Savigliano. Over the years, this research has become increasingly wide-ranging and complex, also turning to other monuments dedicated to the various heroes of the Risorgimento, where a singular operation of linguistic decontextualising of sculpture is evident. Through a strongly pictorial use of colour, Fissore emphasises psychological and human aspects of the various characters investigated. Since 2007, with the project ‘Eroica’, Daniele Fissore elaborated and designed a public installation OPEN AIR-560sqm of size- for the New Parco Dora in Turin on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy. Inaugurated in May 2011, it is a work where the original paintings of the pictorial cycle ‘Eroi’ are reproduced on an urban scale and reworked by Fissore with ad hoc painting gestures and historical quotations of the protagonists of Risorgimento. Since 2012 Fissore has taken up and updated the historical themes of Pic-Nic and sports: golf –Green-, sailing – Marine-, tennis, cricket, polo, fencing, car racing, football, cycling.
