Toyoharu Kunichika
With seal ‚Kunichi hitsu‘. Born in 1835, Toyohara Kunichika grew up in the Kyobashi district of Edo in the midst of traders and craftsmen. In 1848, at the age of 13, he was accepted as an apprentice in the studio of Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III 1786-1865).

Oban diptych, not mounted, not shaded, not trimmed (each approx. 25 x 36.3 cm). 14 x 9 1/2
Good clear colour and in a top condition. Slightly tinted.
Interesting composition consisting of two Kabuki scenes: left section with the actors Ichimura Kakitsu IV (as courtesan 'Yaegiri') and Ichikawa Sadanji I (as 'Sakata Kurando Tokiyuki'), right section with the actor Kabuki Actors: Ichikawa and Iwai. 1860 Bando Kamezo I (as old woman 'Osan').
Sign.: Kunichika hitsu with Toshidama-Seal.
Censor: Aratame.
Dat.: 1867 (Year of the rabbit).

Condition: minor signs of wear, in a small spot of professional shading in the outer margin which is hardly visible.
